Immediately prior to jumping on the plane over to Pow Wow Hawaii, I jammed out a mural in the Arts District of Los Angeles titled “Beauty is More than Skin Deep.” The mural is based off of artwork for a limited edition screenprint release with 1xRun.

The mural reflects the same layered image as the screen print, with a glow in the dark stencil layer to reflect the sixth ‘gloss skull’ layer in the print.  I wanted to experiment with a few new techniques on this wall and see if by using transparent paint layers I could achieve the same effects that we achieved with the screen printing process. The location of the mural, on 6th & Mateo, is a high traffic area at night so I decided to try using glow-in-the-dark paint to give the final ‘skull’ layer a really ghostly feel and I love that it is only revealed in the dark of night!

The combination of glow in the dark paint and some fun with long exposure shots, brings the mural to life to reveal a hidden skull on top that can only be best experienced in person.

Thank to LaLa Arts for the wall hook-up & Birdman Photos for the shots!
